Feeding animals can be quite difficult and if you want to do
everything in the most perfect way it can easily become kind of
a science. But don’t worry, we street dogs and cats are not
exactly demanding when it comes to food and water. However,
there are some basics that should be noted before you decide to
feed us since some food can even cause more problems due to the
fact that most of us haven’t had food maybe for days and are in
general rather malnourished.
We are no humans
Needless to say that dogs and cats are no humans but this
particular fact is often forgotten when it comes to nutrition.
Although our pet colleagues living with you may enjoy a good
slice of pizza, hamburgers or ice cream there is also quite some
good dog and cat food available which suits our needs much more.
Things which usually do not go well with our stomach is spicy or
very fat food.
Cats are no dogs
We have quite a different taste when it comes to food and unlike
our friends the cats we as dogs are not so keen on seafood. No
need to say that on the other hand cats do not appreciate bones
as much as dogs do. But there are plenty of brands and types of
food available for either one of us and such cat or dog food
usually meets our nutrition requirements.
Puppies, adults and seniors
As you know from your own species, babies don’t eat the same
food as adults do and even seniors might need another formula to
support their biological needs and nutrition requirements. Now
you might say that street dogs and stray cats should be grateful
for whatever they might get and: we are grateful. However, the
more appropriate the food the better it is for the health of a
cat or dog living an anyway hard life on the streets of Bangkok.
Dry, canned or real food
Our animal intelligence found out that local pet shops offer a
great variety of different food for cats and dogs and we have to
say that we actually like all of it. It might be more convenient
for you however to choose dry food since it is usually not
smelly and holds much longer when you keep it in the trunk of
your car. But don’t forget the dogs outside the door when you go
for chicken legs and other bony food. Don’t just leave it to the
shop but smuggle it outside. The dogs love bones.
What you can do
As already mentioned above there is a clever way to be equipped
with appropriate animal food all the time: just keep some of the
dry food at home and in the trunk of your car. In addition, you
may also keep some fresh water handy so that you don’t miss a
chance to help an animal in need.
You have surely noticed the usual suspects around your house and
in your Soi. Just like many other animals we like to keep our
territory and we do not travel around the city all too much. As
a result you may find us usually at the same place making it
actually easy to have a pit stop when you pass with your car
anyway. If you keep the food and water handy, it will only cost
you some minutes of your precious time but helps us a lot.
