The Story of Aommy

I am little Aommy and I was born a street dog outside of Bangkok somewhere in the Rayong Province where I also spent my first weeks. Covered by the warm body of my mother I started to imagine what life had in store for me but very soon I learnt that at least there was no food and fresh water to begin with. Although still a puppy I started to roam around the area looking for anything useful to eat but until then my mother did not yet tell me all about the dangers of the world out there. On this unfortunate day I obviously was not street smart enough and crossed a street without taking notice of this fast approaching car. Oh yes, it hit me hard and then it disappeared just like that leaving me back there in the dust of the street. The pain was not the hardest part but the awareness that something went terribly wrong because I could not get up again. My spine was broken. I could not move my back legs any more.

The day of the accident ...

This is how I was found by some nice humans who took me away from the street and brought me to their own place. Their worried faces spelled trouble. But not long after that another lady came along and put me in her pink car. It was Paporn from Khlongdogs coming all the way from Bangkok and who heard of me and was so concerned that she immediately decided to help me. But her face also became shockingly sad when we later visited a specialist at the Chulalongkorn Animal Clinic. There it was. The ultimate truth: my spine was broken and it was broken so badly that there was no hope left that I will ever walk on my own four legs again. Now I definitely was a handicapped dog being forever dependent on the help and care of humans.

... later in the animal clinic ...

Back in the animal clinic I took a rest and it was in this minute when my will to live started to dwindle. The doctors even tried to convince Paporn that I should be put to sleep and some others agreed. But what I did not know is that there where again others who refused to give up on me and so it happened that her husband Thomas in the early morning hours of one of the following days decided to adopt me. Paporn of course agreed. Little did I know about a home but now I have one and I was given what I so desperately needed: someone who really cares for me. True friends.

... my will to live is fading away ...

In my home where I live now I have my special and safe place in the living room together with Khao and Lisa who already stay here at Khlongdogs for many years. During my first days I also had to undergo further medical examinations with ultra-sound, blood tests and of course my first ever vaccination. But more than that I got a pair of human legs and hands and I just have to call whenever I need them. It is Thomas who wakes me up at 5:00 hours and carries me in the garden where he supports me doing my toilet business which I cannot control by myself. During the day we leave the house several times and go to a nearby little park where we play and take a walk. He would lift my back legs up and lets me walk on my front legs until I am tired and roll around on my back. Later I am allowed to the kitchen joining my friends Paporn and Thomas for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We always have a good time.

... finally I am in my new home ...

Thomas talks a lot with me and although I do not understand all the words I feel what it means. He tries to lift up my spirit just a little bit every day and I realized that walking on four legs is one thing, an important thing but it is by far not the only thing in a dogs life. Yes, I still cannot use my back legs and I never will but believe me the green grass smells as good as before, I can still grab a piece of wood and chew on it, I can sing lively tunes with all the other dogs, I can move along with my two legs hopping over the ground and when I use my two human legs I am much faster and best of all I can now smell the blossoms on the trees, the green leaves and I always catch a smile when I look into this face, the face of a real friend.

... playing with my friend Thomas ...

For the time being I still run in “protected mode” but every day I get introduced to some other members of Khlongdogs and many of them live with a handicap. Nam Tan has a broken spine too and as a result suffers from epileptic seizures, Cartoon broke his legs, recovered and now moves pretty funny around the compound, Hiso still suffers from the consequences of a brain injury and Fighter lost one of his back legs but actually doesn’t really care. Both our human friends care for our special needs every day, they never give up and I have to say: “It feels really good!”

... and my friend Paporn who rescued me ...

Soon I will get my own wheels and then we can even walk together down the road of the village. We will take it from here and see what happens. But maybe one thing can be learnt from my story: do not give up fighting for life and believe me: now I really want to live. Whatever he means by that but my friend says that it is all about awareness and not legs.
